Masculinity is a social construct & changes over time, unlike maleness which is biological and fixed.

Many aspects of the masculinities promoted in the media, politics and sport, are unhealthy.

Therefore we can design a more conscious masculinity - one better suited to meet the urgent needs of our times.

The old male model was a "power over" societal model.

It can now be replaced by a fairer model, a partnership model (power sharing)

Solving today's complex issues requires a new societal model - a more equitable, more integrous partnership-based model.

The partnership model gives women and men equal input.

Knowing we can't dominate the environment - it seeks a healthy relationship with nature.

Today most men are unhappy about the macho aspects of their socializing.

Increasingly men are dissatisfied how the old model still glorifies violence and minimizes harm to the environment.

Many men know those beliefs threaten all life on earth.

We're aware that this mix - the old male model - with our high tech, nuclear, and vast industrial powers - is not sustainable.

Many men know these old norms, which emphasized violence and toughness over emotional intelligence, are obselete.

Men's desire to change exists!

THEORIES ABOUT MEN: THE GOOD NEWS

Despite some outdated feminist beliefs, there is nothing inherently wrong with men!

Men were conditioned to serve a societal dominator model and severely punished when they did not conform. We know now that the model operated from within limited reductionist beliefs (narrow lens) and it is this societal model which is today outmoded and severely flawed; NOT the men within it.

Unfortunately the impact of this conditioning on men's lives, on the lives of those they love, and on our precious environment has been disastrous. Understanding that the model is flawed means we can free up energy used for blaming and work collaboratively to design and implement a fairer, more holistic social order.

Our Generation's Choice

We are the generation that can co-create solutions to the many global problems or we can co-destruct. A new type of leadership is required for this task, men and women who are more integrous and more authentic than we have previously seen in any numbers, on this planet. This is why men, who are predominantly the leaders in politics and industry must do this work on to free themselves from the constraints of the old male programming. As they do this work they will understand the necessity to include women in all decision making; women who themselves are also free from the constraints of "patriachal femininity. "

Partnership Skills = Emotional Intelligence

A key component of developing partnership skills is emotional intelligence or emotional competencies. Because most men's emotional abilities have been severely damaged by the dogma of old male socialisation - building our emotional intelligence is the most powerful step we can take.

Innerwork

This requires working on ourselves - cleaning up our innerback yards. We call this healing our feeling function. As we repair our feeling function we find more meaning and joy in life.

As we men do this work we are re-designing masculinity, building a kinder and more intelligent model which benefits us, our partners, our children and the planet.

However this path takes real courage - not the courage of fictional TV heroes - not pub talk courage - not big gym muscle courage - but big heart muscle courage.

Heart based courage is the greatest courage of all. - It takes a real man to 'own his stuff.'

A real man will not let the earth die!
